On the other hand, I know that I can use Google a little too much for certain things. For example, I use Google translator to help me with Spanish homework sometimes and I know that it would be better and more beneficial for myself if I sat down and attempted the homework without any assistance.

Is Google making us stupid?
This isn't the first time I have been asked to evaluate the use of Google. I don't think that Google is making us stupid, I think Google makes things much more convenient and accessible. Personally, I use Google everyday. I think that it is one of the greatest research tools we have available to us. Sure, it keeps us from researching in other fields such as libraries, but they make their materials accessible on the internet for a reason. Google is so popular because of its convenience. You have all the information in the world available literally at your fingertips.

I totally agree with you about how Google is important today because we need and WANT things to be convenient and accessible, at all times. Thats just how our culture is, but I definitely think it's lessened our abilities to utilize other resources, such as the library on print-databases - Which is something you touched on as well.
ReplyDeleteI definitely agree with what you said about using google translator for spanish homework. I often do the same, and I know i'm taking the lazy way out. It's just too tempting know that I could find the answers much fast through google than if I were to search through my textbook.
ReplyDeleteI'm guilty of that too because my Spanish class was online when I was at the community college I went to and I use it to check my Italian homework just to make sure I understood the sentence although it's not 100% accurate all the time.

I completely agree with you! Th popularity of Google IS convenience and that is something that we, as humans, definitely love. I have also had friends who Google translate their foreign language homework all the time, and even though it would be 100 times more beneficial for them to do it on their own, I think that this way you may double check the translator and even if you'e not learning it all by yourself, it helps in a way. You see sentence structure and spelling, at least.
