I made the movie Mean Girls into a website. The high school in the movie is North Shore high school so I made my website to look like it was their school's website. If you haven't seen the movie then you probably won't get a lot of the references but I also added fake people, pictures, etc to give the feel that it was actually the school's real website.

Writing Activity: Layni Case, Taylor Malkus, Matt Tomonto

What is the earliest experience with a computer that you can remember?
I was living in San Diego, and my dad had a desktop computer on his desk, by the door in his room. My first experience with a computer that I remember is in the middle of my kindergarten year. I would use the computer to play with my Hooked On Phonics cd-rom (it really works!) it was definitely one of my favorite things to do. –Layni
Playing a monster truck driving game with a connectable-steering wheel. –Taylor
- I remember being quite small watching my dad type into a black screen with green letters- something I later learned was DOS. It was on an old boxy family computer that took floppy disks. I remember my dad saving work files to these things .  –Matt
What was the first computer that you owned? Did you purchase it or your parents? Did you have to ask for it, or was it just given to you.
My first computer is this piece of crap I’m using right now (and I say that in the most loving manner possible, though if it dies on me one more time, I will launch it off the top of Doak Campbell). I got this laptop as a gift for my 17th birthday. My parents and grandparents chipped in for it. It was my senior year, and I needed on for college, not to mention the desktop that my parents had let me use for schoolwork would take about 30 mins to start up and was the slowest thing in existence. –Layni
Dell desktop, that my parents purchased for the family. –Taylor
I think I was 13 when I got my first computer. It was my birthday and my parents have bought me an HP desktop. It looked really nice but  didn’t actually run very well. I had a little corner in the den with my dad where I felt pretty grown up using it. –Matt
Describe a specific instance in which a computer has been a positive impact in your life.
Summer after my junior year, I had a 4,000 word essay I had to write as part of the requirements to graduate with an I.B. Diploma. I.B. was definitely one of the most rigorous courses I’d ever been involved in (obviously) and it helped me not only get accepted to college, but it gave me college credits so I could skip the basic core classes that everyone has to take and start off focusing on my milestone classes for my major. I had to use a computer to not only research, but type, revise, and edit this paper. –Layni
The first time I got to edit a video on my computer, I realized this is something I'd like to make a career out of. –Taylor
Those late nights where I have the ability to research almost anything that comes to mind, and I spend literally hours searching and reading to my heart’s content. Computers allow me to indulge in this almost weekly habit, and at the end of the night, I feel like I’ve almost accomplished something. – Matt
Describe a specific instance in which a computer has had a negative impact on your life.
The only negative impact of a computer that I can think of is the easy access it has to facebook. I have wasted hours of my life that I will never get back creeping on facebook. I used to leave my hw until midnight because I would be goofing off until the time I got home, to the time I started my hw. It’s caused many sleepless nights and definitely poor quality work. – Layni
I waste a LOT of time on the internet looking up random crap, distracting me from what I really need to accomplish. –Taylor
As mentioned above, the computer allows me to get easily distracted. Sometimes when I should be writing- writing intensely, only focusing on what I’m doing-  I give into temptation, and ultimately don’t get much done. –Matt
List as many parts of the computer that you can think of
Screen, keyboard, RAM, memory, dvd/cd slot, motherboard, fan, case, hard drive –Layni
CPU, Motherboard, Monitor, Keyboard, USB –Taylor
CPU, processor, RAM, hard drive, graphics card, sound card, motherboard –Matt
Do you have a data back-up solution? If so describe it.
My father made me sign up in my senior year for an online back-up site called drop box. There is an icon at the bottom right of screen with which I can drag files, whether they be documents, pictures, power points, etc. It is automatically updated every time I drag a file in it. There is an app on my phone for it, so I can access it anywhere, including on other computers if I go to the website. –Layni
I have an external USB hard-drive that I CC the majority of my files too. –Taylor
I don’t actually have a data backup plan (though I know I should). Most of the important stuff I have hard copies of. I also send most of my big documents to my email. –Matt
Do you do any activities on the computer besides word-processing/gaming that does not involve the internet?
I create playlists and make c.d.s as well as paint pictures and edit photos –Layni
I edit video as well as photos, store important dates on my calendar, prepare power points and presentations, etc.. –Taylor
Powerpoints, Rosetta Stone –Matt
List as many sites/networks with which you have an account as you can.
Facebook, myspace, livejournal, blogger, google, stumbleupn, twitter, windows live (fsu-email), both my banks, black board, rentpayment.com, skype, oovoo, youtube, NEOPETS!!!!! –Layni
Facebook, G-mail, Suntrust, National Collegiate Volleyball Federation, USA Volleyball, Men’s Warehouse, Brooks Brothers, Earthlink, FSU-Blackboard, 8tracks.com, Stumbleupon.com, WEPO Blog, Tenant, portal(townhouse), Theta Chi’s website, FsuFilm, Seminoles.com, Youtube –Taylor
facebook, google (you tube), Suntrust, Amazon, WOW (back in the day), Itunes facebook, google (you tube), Suntrust, Amazon, WOW (back in the day), Itunes –Matt
Do you store any data in the cloud? With what service?
Yes? I use drop box –Layni
I put videos on Youtube. –Taylor
I file most of my documents in my email, I have pictures on facebook –Matt
What websites (besides FB/email) do you frequent? What is your distraction rotation? What media/news/entertainment websites/blogs/tumblrs do you visit daily?
I frequent rage-comics.net, twitter, neopets, stumbleupon, youtube, video2mp3, and wikipedia the most. My distraction rotation basically goes like this: I decide its time to do hw, so the first hour-without fail-I goof off and do everything completely unrelated to whatever task I have at hand. Usually I’ll check fb first, followed by my e-mail. Then, if there’s a song I want to add to my itunes, I’ll look it up on youtube and then convert it (illegally muahahaha) to an mp3 file. Once I’m done with that, or if I didn’t need to update my itunes, I would then freely browse rage-comics for a good laugh and Wikipedia whatever odd questions I have popping up in my head. –Layni
Stumbleupon.com, TED.com, CNN.com, Youtube, 8tracks.com, vevo.com, vimeo.com, clothing websites, etc… -Taylor
I frequent facebook, Google, Wikipedia. My distraction rotation often begins with Wikipedia and ends with downloading music, or reading part of a book posted online, or checking Amazon to see how much the book would be to buy. For news I turn to CNN, MSN, Time,  for entertainment I’ll go on the Onion or read a webcomic (most often Hark! A Vagrant) –Matt

I don’t really remember many experiences with computers. I do know that for Christmas one year (maybe around 11 or 12), I got a Macintosh computer. It was a blue Apple computer, and I got it from “Santa.” It was a great experience. I literally remember jumping up and down and running around the house in my underwear, screaming at the top of my lungs. I was able to have my own computer. I do remember, though, that I think the computer was always in my parents’ room until I finally got one of my own (before the Apple). Christmas; Santa Claus; blue Apple Macintosh; put in my room; given to me for Christmas; think I got a printer with it as well

I can only think of my lack of ability to keep a computer for more than 6 months-1 year. A positive impact a computer has had on me was fitting in because all of my friends generally had their own computer before I did, so when I was able to have my own computer, I was really excited and able to fit in; also, for convenience’s sake, it’s a handy tool.

A kid at summer camp dropping the computer on the floor caused some tension between my family because it showed some lack of responsibility on my part.

Samantha Harvill:

My first experience with a computer that I can remember is creating an AOL email account and chatting with my other friends that had an aol account as well.

My first computer that was my own was a hp labtop that I received as a graduation present from highschool from my mother. I had to ask for it but I knew I was going to get it because I needed one for college.

Every time I facetime my mom and brother it impacts my life because I miss them all the time and en though Im not with them 24/7 like I used to be while in highschool I can still see them through a computer screen

in highschool I dated this boy name trey for about 2 years and I hacked into his myspace account and found out he cheated on me, and I just remember feeling sick to my stomach and wishing computers and everything didn’t exist

hard drive, monitor, camera, keyboard, mouse, cd drive, screen.

I do not have a data back up soloution, I don’t even know how to do it

If my computer was stolen I would miss all my pictures, and funny videos my friends and I have taken.

When I check my email on aim I get daily Hollywood stories that pop up and I just click on them and read them.

Michelle Spivak:

What is the first experience with a computer that you can remember?

Besides using a speak n spell when I was younger, my first experience I remember would be sitting in computer lab playing Math Blaster and Oregon Trail in elementary school, and in fifth grade moving up to Mavis Beacon Typing programs.

• What was the first computer that you owned? Did you purchase it yourself? Did you have to ask for it, or was it just given to you?

The first computer I owned was a Dell laptop that my parents purchased for me to take to college. It was just given to me because it is an essential tool needed for school. It wasn’t till it “broke” two years later that I begged for a Mac laptop that was also purchased by my parents and given to me as a gift.

• Describe a specific instance in which a computer has had a positive impact on your life.

When I was retaking one of my classes because I did so poorly the first time around, I realized all my notes and papers I had taken before were saved on my computer. I was able to refer back for better understanding of the material, and was able to review my previous work and see what I needed to do differently the next time around.

• Describe a specific instance in which a computer has had a negative impact on your life.

I was taking a course in which a computer was necessary. I took all my notes on it and had all my projects saved. The entire thing crashed in the middle of my class, and in order to fix it everything had to be wiped from the computers memory. I lost everything.

• List as many parts of the computer that you can think of.
o Screen
o Monitor (same thing?)
o Cd drive
o Disk drive
o Battery
o Power button
o Speakers

• Do you have a data back-up solution? If so, describe it. If not, is there anything on your computer that you would miss if you computer was lost/broken/stolen?

After losing everything on my first laptop I know I should back it up with a USB drive, but I don’t. I would miss everything on my computer. All my school work, notes, pictures, music, work progress reports, etc.

• Do you do any activities on the computer besides word-processing/gaming that do no involve the internet?

I use Microsoft word to take notes for school, and excel for work.

• List as many sites/networks with which you have an account as you can.
o Facebook
o Twitter
o Vystar credit union
o Suntrust banking
o Blogger
o Glogger
o Google
o FSU campus
o FSU webmail
o Shop it to me
o Ideeli
o Gilt group
o Urban outfitters
o Multiple online stores

• Do you store any data in the cloud? With what service?

I post pictures on facebook, and save things I like to sites such as wanelo.

• What sites (besides fb/email) do you use frequently? What is your distraction rotation? What media/news/etc. do you visit daily.

I visit a lot of different online boutiques daily. I also go on Stumbleupon a lot. I can stay on the shopping sites for hours, but when stumbling I usually am on to the next page within the first couple of minutes. i visit facebook and webmail daily.

Writing Excerise

Mary Shannon:
Playing Where in the world is Carmen Sandigeo? on my mom’s PC. I remember knowing about the computer before then but my first real memory using it was playing that game. I know I played a lot of educational computer games as a kid but that one stands out.
My first computer was baught by my parents on black Friday in a crazy wal-mart in Alabama. It was very cheep and my parents thought it was a good idea that my sister and myself fiannly had a computer for we were going into High school and they knew that we enjoied to work in our rooms. It was a black tosiba and I still have it, filled with virises for I had to watch Doctor Who online before it premired in the US. It is slow now but I still have a fondness for it.
I guess a specific instance that a computer has had a positive aspect on my life would be when I first talked to my mom on Skype. Skype allows me to have an easier separation with my family and friends back home. Seeing them is way better than just talking to them on the phone.
A negative impact on my life that a computer has given me… I guess you can say when I had a large paper due, the internet in my house was out and I had to finish it in two days. I would not write my paper by hand, I only wanted to type it.
The screen, the keyboard, the cd drive, the memory, the mouse, the motherboard, the hard drive, the modem(?,) the camera
No and I should cause I lost everything that I had on this computer right before school started. My computer would not go on the internet no matter what so I had to reboot everything. I was very sad and I lost all my pictures and whatnot. I guess you can say Facebook has my backup picture but with my documents, I would lose them all. I want to get an external hard drive but that money.
Well…I guess you can say I upload pictures and I like to look at them from time to time, reliving the memories.

I heard of the cloud, my sister tried to describe it to me, but no, I do not do anything in the cloud. Wait, I heard that posting pictures on facebook it part of the cloud so I guess I do. What about the cloud that apple was doing…I don’t know.
I go on divanart to see if the people I watch posted something, I go and check the blogs I fallow, I used to check in on Harry Potter and Twilight sites( but not so much), I read any update fanfiction that I am subscribed to, I go and watch videos on youtube, I play poker with my sister on puzzle pirates, I talk to my family on Skype, I find pointless games on cartoon network.com, I read a web comics, I shop on ebay and amazon,

Laura:
10-10-11
- the first experience I have with a computer is playing a computer game. I can't exactly recall, but i get the feeling it was one of those educational games such as Where in the world is Carmen Santiago or even a Disney game such as the like king. But in all honesty, I don't remember the computer not being there.

-the first computer I ever owned was a HP pavilions laptop. It was a graduation gift from high school, and it was the first laptop I had ever really fooled around with. It wasnt what I exactly wanted,I knew I was getting a laptop, but I had asked since I was 15 for a MacBook.

-a specific instance when a computer had a huge positive impact on my life was when I was 13 and I spent 3 weeks in lebanon. I had no contact with my family for the first time in my life, the computer was able to let me keep in touch with my family

-an instance where the computer had a negative impact on my life was when I had a major paper due last year for my Latin American history class, and my computer crashed at 11pm, the day before. I had half of my paper done and then it was gone. I lost half a letter grade on my paper

-hardrive, mouse, screen, fan, keys, keyboard, speaker, wires

-I do have a back up plan to save my material. It is an external hardrive that I have to plug in and upload all the information to. It is similar to a USB but has the ability to contain more information

-no.

What is the first experience with a computer you can remember?

Elementary, school on a very old Mac, learning how to type with my friend’s dad as our teacher.

What was the first computer that you owned? Did you purchase it, or your parents? Did you have for it, or was it just given to you?

My first computer was a laptop that I had to ask for and I think it was after I graduated high school for college. I had to bug my dad for it because the family computer we had that was given to me when my parents separated, I wouldn’t really call my own computer.

Describe a specific instance in which a computer has had a positive impact on your life.

Being able to take it to class with me to take notes is a positive impact but I would have to say having it to be on Facebook to keep up with childhood friends I barely even see anymore.

Describe a specific instance in which a computer has had a negative impact on your life.

Having my first computer crash on me two months from when I got it. The hard drive having to be replaced and getting it back with Windows 95 on it when they were supposed to reinstall all the soft wear for me, so I had to go put more money into it and it finally died on me months later.

Michelle Collins:

1. My earliest experience with a computer is being 9 or 9 years old and playing those interactive learning computer games. I loved them and would play almost every day because I wanted to beat the levels. It had tasks that had to do with spelling, math, matching, etc.

2. The first computer that I owned myself was my Macbook pro that I received as a high school graduation gift. My dad bought it for me. It was a given that I would get a laptop for college but I had to convince my dad that I should get a Macbook rather than a dell or something.

3. I don’t get to see my grandparents that live in Holland very often, and a few years ago they got a computer. I’m now able to talk to them frequently, send them pictures, and update them on my life much more often now than before they had computer access.

4. Facebook makes studying and focusing on school work very difficult and is a negative impact on my life. I almost wish it didn’t exist sometime because I feel like I would have straight A’s if I weren’t distracted by it so often. It’s good for keeping it touch with friends and family but it sucks hours out of my week from just aimless use.

5. Motherboard, ram, monitor, keyboard, screen, disk drive, mouse.

6. No I do not have a date back-up solution. If my computer were lost or stolen I would miss having all my semesters of schoolwork available. I don’t have many pictures saved on my computer and my music could easily be re-downloaded. It would mainly be papers and projects I had completed throughout the years.

7. Besides word processing and gaming, I listen to music on my computer, use the photo booth app, and I use PowerPoint at times.

8. I have accounts on Facebook, tumblr, twitter, regions, SunTrust, base camp, GIN, mhcentro, yahoo, FSU webmail, MySpace, eBay, Amazon, Ticketmaster, Gmail, Google +,

9. I store data in the cloud by posting pictures to Facebook.

10. Besides Facebook and my email, websites I frequent are twitter, tumblr, and blackboard. My distraction rotation is Facebook and tumblr. I visit Google daily to use the search engine and I visit Yahoo! daily to read my horoscope.

Emma Thornton:

1. In third grade my school got a computer lab and we went once a week with our class to play learning games and draw on paint.

2. The Sony Vaio that I currently have. My parents helped me pay for it. I had to bug my parents for it, it was supposed to be my graduation present but I didn’t get it until a week before I left for FSU.

3. This morning when I was getting ready I checked the weather on my computer and saw that it would rain all day, so I wore rain boots. If I hadn’t been able to do that, I’d be soaked right now.

4. Whenever a new computer game comes out that involves Star Ward or just war in general, my boyfriend has to buy it and play it constantly, which takes away from my time with him.

5. Screen, keyboard, motherboard, battery, disc drive, game card, RAM

6. I have no idea what that even means, but I would miss my pictures.

7. No, unless you count using power point.

8. facebook, gmail, wells fargo, zappos, blogger, blackboard, outlook, ebay, amazon, glogger (for this class), youtube, victoria’s secret

9. Yes, facebook and gmail

10. frequent: ebay, amazon, tumblr, zappos, texts from last night, ny times

Daily: friend’s tumblr accounts, ny times
