Is Google making me stupid?
Google, in my opinion, does not effect my intelligence level. It effects my curiosity and work ethic. I literally Googled the exact question "is google making me stupid?" And I did not look at anything longer than two paragraphs, nor did I look past the first page of results. Unless I'm searching for something important, like my future living situation or pet, I have never looked past the first page of results that a search engine gives me. I don't read into long things either. That is for sites like stumbleupon.com. But thanks to google, I constantly search for stupid things like song lyrics, definitions, synonyms, translations, movie/actor information, etc. There is no point in owning a dictionary or going to a site such as imdb or wikipedia because those results will be in the top five search results by simply opening a new tab and searching directly in the google search bar. A world of information-both useful and useless is all at my fingertips. Google services are extremely easy and free of charge, thus, vastly declining our efforts when searching for a solution. But using Google is a personal experience. It can make one lazy, smarter, faster at receiving information, or even wasteful with time. I personally use Google as a personally designed homepage with a horoscope, weather information, news, and games in addition to an email service and search engine. But someone else, for example, could use it to email his daughter a series of pictures, videos, and stories about her life from the time she was born in order for her to read as shown in the Google Chrome commercial. While some aspects of the entire internet can make people stupider, lazy, or wasteful with time (facebook, youtube, porn, or scams), I do not believe that Google in itself is responsible for this.
