I picked a Greek vase for my visual artifact. The framing the vase starts with the shape of the vase itself and goes to ever little line of design. The main picture of the people with the horses and cart are set in the middle of the vase, framed by the plant designs on the left and right as well as the upper and lower designs. The lid of the vase can be see as a frame as well for where it meets the vase. The nature of the object is to tell the people who owned it a story/myth of their culture. It is meant to keep the next generations aware of what makes up traditional values. Each color on the vase could also represent an important idea in the ancient Greek culture and these colors could have been used to further the means to pass on the history to the next generations. It is made of clay with black and whit paint. I do believe that the function of the vase was accomplished because it survived thousands of years, telling the same story it was made to tell.

This is a photo of a glass or goblet that is used during communion in the Catholic faith. This is a very special element in the practice of the Catholic faith because of the meaning of communion. In Catholicism, it is believed that the glass holds red wine which is blessed by the priest and once it is drank by that who is receiving it, it turns into the blood of Jesus Christ. The nature of the glass is within the faith and religious beliefs of the Catholic people. The glass is very important and fragile as it is believed to hold the blood of Jesus. The function of the glass is just that, to hold the red wine which is blessed by the priest and then transformed into Jesus' blood. The glass is very extravagant and although not all are exactly the same in each church or community they all hold the same value and depiction. The glass' value, appearance, and function, and nature is very appreciated by those who practice the Catholic faith.

For my visual artifact, I chose Leonardo DaVinci's "Mona Lisa". I chose this because I have discussed this artwork before in my high school's AP Art History class. To everyone around the world, this piece of art very distinguishable. Within the Mona Lisa, there are three main frames that differentiate the sky, the landscape in the back and the more upfront landscape, which is clearer and closer next to Mona Lisa. I believe that this is a literal interpretation of nature that Foss discussed. Also, on Mona Lisa's body, there are several "mini" frames such as her neckline and the way her hands are crossed across her body, forcing the color scheme to change from dark clothes to light skin. Also, I believe that the shading around her eyes is what makes her seem like she is constantly staring at you directly in the eyes, no matter what viewpoint you stand from. As for the function, it was made by DaVinci with oil pastels to depict a woman from Italy. Although it was many of DaVinci's works that was never fully completed, it was thanks to his assistant, finished and sold to King Francois I of France. It stayed at the Chateau Fountainebleau until King Louis XIV purchased it from King Francois I. After the French Revolution, Mona Lisa was moved to the Lourve, where it stayed for many many years in Paris.

I chose to do Vincent Van Gogh's "Starry Night." It's one of my favorite pieces and obviously a very popular well-known piece, making it a good example for this assignment. The nature of the painting is an oil painting on canvas. The function of the painting was for Van Gogh to depict the view outside of his window at night, painted from memory in the daytime. The evaluation would that it was very successful, being that it is one of the most well-known paintings in existence.

I have chosen the picture of the cover of National Geographic which covers the picture of the Afghan Girl. It is a popular picture and it was also a very popular issue at the time.
The nature of the picture is a magazine so it is paper. The function of this picture was so that National Geographic can intrigue readers and audiences worldwide with the issues in Afghanistan. At that time, women were never allowed to talk to foreigners or other men in general. Not that the problem has evolved much since then. But the fact that a picture was produced of a woman, uncovered at that is, was phenomenal.
As for the evaluation of the product, I would say that it succeeded in what they set out to do. In the picture, the girl looks scared yet interested in what is going on with the photographer. Obviously it was a moment for her to shine and be her own person in her restricted lifestyle. The audience was able to see that from her eyes, so it intrigued them to actually purchase a copy of N.G. and read up on the picture.

I chose Georges Seurat's "A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte" to analyze using Foss' framework.

The nature of the artifact is oil on canvas, though he reworked the original and provided many preliminary drawings and oil sketches of the painting as well.

The function of the piece is to work optical and color (or colour overseas) theory into a piece of work, which relates to the fact that several colored dots and hues of those dots are fixed at a certain level that makes the dots come together, therefore incorporating a newer, beginning stage of a term now called pointillism, overall branching off of Impressionism.

The evaluation of the piece is a positive one because the piece now sits in The Art Institute of Chicago, a very well-known and renowned art institute. Years later, a musical was made based on Seurat's life, with a piece in the musical, "It's Hot Up Here" a direct reference to the painting itself in which the characters perform posed in the positions of the people in the painting as they complain about the fact that they are, in fact, a painting essentially coming to life right before the audience's eyes.

The picture is from my boyfriends Facebook page which would be the nature of the picture since it is a transfered photo to online. I believe his mom took the picture while they were in Orlando for Universal Mardi Gras. The function is pretty much him taking a picture of the people or what we cannot see outside of the lens, but he is being framed by being the center of focus and everyone walking by in the distance sorta hazy. For the evaluation, the function got accomplished because of his page he has a whole bunch of pictures of his time there.

I chose to analyze the Venus of Willendorf figurine. The artist is unknown. It is a very small limestone specimen created in ancient times. The frame of this piece is the actual figurine itself. The nature of this piece is to idolize the female form of that time. Her large breasts and hips represent fertility which was important during this time. Some Anthropologists believe that this woman was kept in people's homes because of it's small size, making it's function purely decorative. This woman is an icon of prehistoric art. It's very controversial that this woman was naked because of the time that this figurine was from. It positively represents the female form and reproduction. It's amazing that this figurine was made with such detail because of the tools that were available at this time.

For this assignment I have chosen a picture of stone tablets inscribed with ancient Ugaritic cuneiform music. Specialists believe that this inscription is a hymn to Nikkal, Moon goddess and patroness of fruits and orchards. The nature of this artifact is the stone tablets. The function of the tablets is to pass down the melody of the song which was etched on them. As for the evaluation of these tablets, I do believe that it is a positive one. No, the music on the tablets may not be well known, but I believe the fact that the tablets are even still in existence is rather remarkable.

  12. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0107985/

I chose the cover of the family classic rookie of the year!!! the nature of this object is the dvd, vhs, or bluray disc format. i see the function is to portray the positive message that "rookie of the year" sends. on the cover you see the words Family Feature and the Fox logo. this shows that all ages can watch and the fox logo on the front shows that viewers can trust this (this was when Fox was known mostly for its family oriented movies/tv). the cover also shows the much older players on the team lifting the pre-teen boy who is on the team as well. the fact that they are all dressed the same and that the boy is smiling shows that this is a comedy about a young boy living out his wildest dreams at a very early age, sending the message that "anything is possible". my evaluation is that this artifact does its job. When i see the cover i smile because it welcomes you to join in on the adventure.

  14. http://www.rage-comics.net/main.php?g2_itemId=4556

I chose to use a Rage Comic to analyze. The framing of the work is the comic vignettes as well as the two columns the comic is separated into to differentiate between the author’s perception of his job and the reality of his job. The artist is unknown because rage comics are created by random everyday people and uploaded to the site. The nature of the comic is for the author to vent. These comics convey just about every emotion as well as they have predetermined faces for each emotion (the facial expression of the face clues the reader into what the emotion is). The function of the comic is for the reader to get a good laugh as well as be able to empathize, as each comic is about everyday life occurrences-originally only situations which generally annoyed the author where made, but then it expanded to just about every emotion humanly possible. As for evaluation of the piece, I say it does its job extremely well. It’s a very popular website, and it has an enormous user/viewer base as well. I know I’ve spent a good amount of time browsing the comics sometimes when I have some free down time to myself.

The image i chose is one from PETA which represents people who stand up for the ethical treatment of animals--something I consider extremely important to me as well as something that is really underrated in it's level of concern in our society. The nature of this picture would be paper, as it was printed in a magazine (I believe Cosmopolitan?). The function of this picture is to give people a more rational alternative to "bearskin". The line "BARESKIN not BEARSKIN" also has a slight sexual appeal type of function which leans toward our sex driven nation and asks the reader to choose being naked or wearing an animal as well as displaying a large picture of an unclothed male. The evaluation of this piece is an entirely effective one. With the naked man who takes up the entire page, the reader is drawn to see "why" and then eyes follow to the bold white print which contains a sentence that allows this reader to see the "better" alternatives to killing animals and really makes them think/aware of what's going on.

The above link is to the commercial that Sofia Coppola directed for the perfume Miss Dior Cherie. The nature of this ad is the stream of video clips themselves, of a young French girl roaming around the streets of Paris having a lovely time, as well as the music that accompanies her. The colors used in this clip are all very pastel and light and almost surreal looking, making the video look almost as if it is taking place in a dream and not in real life. This lends to the idea that if one uses this perfume then life will be all light and pastel and dreamy- not a bad notion! The function of this advertisement is twofold: I think that Sofia Coppola directed the project to get her already prolific name out even more (I also believe that it came out around the time of the release of her Marie Antoinette film, so more press to boost sales on that film) as well as Dior's goal to make people want to buy this perfume. I should say that, in evaluating this ad, both functions are achieved, as this ad was very popular when it came out and it now has over 1 million views on youtube.

I chose to use this picture advertising for Harry Potter. The nature is an intense picture framed around the main character-Harry Potter, with supporting characters in the background. Each character intensely holding their wands are framed around the background which is dark and mirrors the plot. The function is really advertisement for the Harry Potter "cult" to get excited about another movie. Although it is for money, it also is a portrayal of the movie and novel as an art form. During evaluation, this piece was effective in achieving adverting and artistic greatness.

This is a link to a Fox News screenshot of a poll on global warming.

Nature: As I mentioned it's poll findings presented to and audience, it's made up of a mostly red color scheme with the focus on the words "Somewhat Likely, Very Likely, and Not Very Likely." The medium is the fox news television program that aired this poll.

Function: The three options for the poll make it clear that the results of the poll show strong evidence as the the falsifying of research.

Evaluation: I believe the point came across well due not only to the actual outcome of the poll, but also the way it was presented on-screen.
